Traveling to Norway with kids - Days 9 & 10
Next stop: Gausdal
I considered stopping at a museum in the morning before heading north, but we were all tired. So instead, we went to the train station and caught the 12:34 train to Lillehammer. The train ride takes about 2 1/2 hours and costs about 300 NOK ($30 USD) for an adult ticket. Kids under 6 ride for free! My former father in law met us at the train station and brought us back to his place for the weekend.
The next day we went to Maihaugen in Lillehammer. Maihaugen is a collection of old farm buildings from around Gudbrandsdalen. Some of the buildings are on their own, others are part of a grouping that came from a single farm. There is also a section that has houses from different areas, including the current Queen´s childhood home. Finally, there is a main street from Lillehammer from 50 some years ago. It is a very large area, so I think it took us 4 hours to see as much as we did, and we didn´t get to every part. The kids´ absolute favorite part was watching the blacksmith make an ax head. They were fascinated and stood still and watched for quite some time. We finished the evening at Arne´s house, tired from all that walking!
