Traveling to Norway with kids - Day 2
Day 2: otherwise known as our first full day in Oslo!
Today we started our adventure by hiking through the woods to Sognsvann. Sognsvann is a popular lake in Oslo, especially during the summer time. You can reach it by taking the subway, a bus, or depending on where you are staying, you can follow a trail through the woods to get there. We took the path through the woods, though I probably overestimated how far my kids can comfortably hike. The path ended up being about 3 or 3.5 km / 2 miles. We had to stop part way for a snack and water break, but we made it!
Sognsvann has places to swim, a trail around the lake, a beach volleyball court, and a kiosk with waffles and ice cream. It also happens to be the location of Norway´s School of Sports Sciences. A friend of mine works there, so we were able to get a tour of the facilities. It was very impressive. Anyone thinking about Sports Sciences should definitely consider it.
We ate our matpakke (packed lunch), and then got on the RuterBillett app to buy our travel passes. Since we will be in Oslo for about a week, we bought a week pass for $35. It costs the same as 3 day passes, but lasts for 7. It works on all forms of transportation: bus, subway, tram, and boat. I also found out that kids under 6 ride on public transportation for free!
We hopped on the t-bane, took a trip downtown and walked around a bit. We then made sure to stop a grocery story. We ended up spending about $60 on things like bread, toppings, fruit, milk and eggs. Buying groceries and preparing simple meals is a great way to save money while traveling! Then we went back to our place and spent the evening hanging out with friends. They brought over way too much pizza and we chatted while the kids played. Super fun!
