Traveling to Norway with kids - Day 7
Time to get out the hiking shoes! We started the day by taking the t-bane (metro) to the end of line 1, Frognerseteren. Frognerseteren has beautiful views over the Oslo fjord and offers many hiking trails. There is also a beautiful restaurant and café that might just have the best hot chocolate around. Unfortunately, the café was closed (I think we were too early) and so we started hiking down the mountain to Holmenkollen.
Holmenkollen was a lot of fun. The kids were amazed at the sized of it! They also loved seeing the roller skiers zooming around the paved trails. I wasn´t sure how much I wanted to spend, but since I wasn´t willing to do the zip line down the ski jump with kids, I agreed that we could go in the ski simulator. It is a pod that you sit in and watch a screen while the seats shake and tilt to simulate speeding down a slalom course at nearly 100 mph.
Inside the museum was a ton of fun. There is a kids section now that is modeled after a story of elves in the mountains, called Blåkollen. There are slides, and peep holes, a mini house, and a lookout. The kids were happy exploring for a long time! We then went to the the top of the ski jump, where I enjoyed the views, and the kids got a bit nervous because of the height.
After our hike, we went home for a break before setting off for downtown Oslo. I heard the new Deichman library had a fun kids section, so we decided to check it out. It is a beautiful library! There are 5 floors, one of which has kids books and reading areas. It also has a lovely area to sit and read or work while looking out of the fjord. Since the opera is next door, we crossed the street and ran all over the rooftop. There is a backstage tour available, which I have really enjoyed, but I didn´t think the kids would be as interested in that. Instead, we went to the new beach at Bjørvika. The kids played, bounced, splashed, and completely wore themselves out. What a day!
